Idynomite Media is now offering lossless audio downloads in addition to the tradition mp3 offerings starting with SweetTooth's Self Titled Release. Lossless audio formats such as 44/16 WAV, Apple Lossless and FLAC formats offer pristine audio quality identical to that of the original CD. While ubiquitous in it's device compatibility, the mp3 format forsakes audio quality in favor of smaller file sizes. When dial-up connections were the primary way most people connected to the internet, mp3's made the most sense for audio delivery because on average an mp3 file was able to deliver 1 minute of audio for every 1 megabyte of storage and bandwidth. By comparison, 44/16 WAV files take roughly 10 megabytes for the same 1 minute of audio. As dial-up internet connections gave way to cable, dsl and even fiber in some homes the need to compress audio into smaller file sizes has become less important. Additionally, hard drive sizes have increased drastically during this time, making storing 600 megabytes of audio data in one of the lossless formats feasible.
